Trekking in the Ait Bougmez Valley( the happy valley)
Embark on a 5-day trek through the Aït Bougmez Valley, nestled in the heart of Morocco’s Central High Atlas Mountains. This journey takes you through the picturesque “Happy Valley,” renowned for its terraced fields, traditional Berber villages, and the warm hospitality of its inhabitants. As you traverse this serene landscape, you’ll have the opportunity to engage with local communities, experience their daily lives, and immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of the region.
Day 1: Marrakech – Demnate – Aït Boulli – Aït Bougmez
Embark on a scenic journey from Marrakech to Demnate, with a delightful stop at Iminifri to explore the remarkable natural bridge. Continue your adventure with a visit to the village of Iouaridene to observe ancient dinosaur footprints. Proceed along a mountainous route to the captivating red valley of Aït Boulli, before reaching the entrance to the “Happy Valley” of Aït Bougmez. In the afternoon, commence your trek with a gentle ascent into the Arous Valley, offering a glimpse into the daily life of the Berber communities. After approximately 5 hours of travel and 1 hour of walking, settle into a traditional lodge for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Exploring the Heart of Aït Bougmez Valley – Overnight in Rbat Village
On this day, immerse yourself in the vibrant culture and stunning landscapes of the Aït Bougmez Valley. Embark on a 4-hour walk through picturesque Berber villages renowned for their traditional architecture. Stroll past terraced fields adorned with apple and walnut trees, and witness the daily activities of the local inhabitants. The valley’s fertile lands and welcoming communities offer a unique glimpse into Berber life. Conclude your day with a warm and authentic overnight stay in a local’s home in the village of Rbat, experiencing the renowned hospitality of the High Atlas region.
Day 3: Aït Imi – Adazen Mountain – Aït Hkem Valley – Zaouiat Oualmzi
Embark on a captivating journey through the Aït Bougmez Valley, beginning with a visit to the village of Ibaklioun to explore ancient dinosaur footprints embedded in the rock. From there, ascend the Adazen ridge, traversing a juniper forest that offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Azouri and Igoudamen. Descend along a broad path leading to the village of Ifren, where you’ll experience the daily life of the local Berber community. Conclude your day with an overnight stay in a traditional Berber home in Zaouiat Oualmzi, immersing yourself in the region’s rich culture. The day’s trek covers approximately 4.5 hours of walking.
Day 4: Zaouiat Oualmzi – Descent through the Aït Bougmez Valley – Timit
On the final day of our trek, we delve deeper into the cultural and natural heritage of the Aït Bougmez Valley. As we descend through the valley, we pass through several Berber villages, offering opportunities to witness daily life—villagers tending to their fields and women washing clothes by the river. The traditional adobe houses harmoniously blend with the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains. Our journey culminates with a climb to the ancient marabout and fortified granary of Sidi Moussa, perched on a pyramid-shaped mountain. From this vantage point, we enjoy panoramic views of the valley stretching in three directions. The day’s hike spans approximately 5 hours. We conclude with an overnight stay in a local’s home in the village of Timit.
Day 5: Aït Bougmez Valley – Ouzoud Waterfalls – Marrakech
After breakfast, we depart from the Aït Bougmez Valley, taking a scenic route to Azilal. From there, we continue to the renowned Ouzoud Waterfalls, situated approximately 150 km northeast of Marrakech. These majestic waterfalls cascade over three tiers, plunging a total of 110 meters into a lush gorge surrounded by olive groves and red sandstone cliffs. The area is also home to Barbary macaques, adding to the charm of this natural wonder. Following our visit, we return to Marrakech, concluding our trekking journey.
